Mom saved the day. And the dog!

That's me and Snap running, but not running away

On our way to run an errand last weekend, mom saw a terrible situation unfold, jumped in immediately, and averted what could have been a tragedy.

We had stopped at our destination, and mom had me outside for a little potty break. She noticed a man walking 3 dogs on leash near us. Suddenly, the man yelled "no" and when mom looked over, one of the little dogs was slipping out his harness! We were near a train tracks, and next to a VERY busy street.

The man clearly didn't know what to do, as his dog took off down the street (thankfully away from the street and into a business park.) Mom knew what to do, and sprung into action.

First, throw me back into my crate.

Next, fill pockets with treats.

Next, take my leash and make a loop out of it.

Next, jump in the van to chase after the dog - most dogs love to go for rides, right?

As mom headed down the street, she saw the man running/walking, looking for his dog. She pulled up and told him to put his other to dogs into the van, because he needed to be focused on his loose dog, not his leashed dogs.

With the dogs in the car, she continued to drive, scanning up and down the parking lots. Finally she spotted the dog!!!

She got out, and got his attention by asking if he "wanted to go for a ride?" He looked at her, and his ears perked up. She opened the van door, and the dog came close, but wouldn't get in. So she squatted down and quietly asked again if he wanted to go for a ride. He came close and stopped.

Mom SWOOPED in and picked the dog up (hoping it wouldn't bite her - it was a terrier). But the dog was very cuddly, so he just relaxed in her arms. He was VERY hot and tired from running, but unharmed otherwise.

Mom drove back to the man, gave him his dog, and educated him on the hazards of walking multiple dogs at once, wearing harnesses that are too loose, and thinking a human can outrun a dog. He was very grateful, and we went on our merry way.

Do YOU know what to do if a dog gets loose?

  1. I use one of my dogs as sit if they are with me. Usually the running dog will run to my dog to p,at and then I can grab them.

  2. Oh my gosh, I saw this very thing not two weeks ago... a terrier had gotten loose and was running madly with his lead dangling. I turned around quickly to go back and help, but a walker had managed to call him to her quietly, and held him while his owner ran up. Scary!

  8. Good job Gracie's Mom!!
The very first thing I learned is to come when Mom says HERE!. She always has treats in her pocket and I get rewarded for coming from wherever I am. It came in handy when I slipped out of the gate one time and headed off. Mom said GRETA HERE! and I turned right around and came back to get my treat. They also tell us at obedience class if your dog runs off do not chase them. They say make a lot of silly noise and run the opposite direction and more than likely the dog will chase you to see whats up.

    pughugs,
    Greta, Bailey and Hazel too!
