Memory Lane - Brandy

Next up: Brandy

Brandy in a rare moment of relaxation

Born: July, 1990

Died: February, 1998

When Gunther was about 2 years old, mom decided to add to the pack. She was working at a vet, and a client called to say she had to give up her Boxer, Brandy. Mom had known Brandy from when she was a puppy, and was shocked at the situation. It appears the family had a new baby, and Brandy was getting ignored. Being a Boxer, she was having none of that, and started "acting out". The final straw was when she jumped their fence at 2 am, into the neighbor's yard, busted through the screen door of their bedroom, and jumped into bed with them! Yeah, a 60 pound Boxer.

Mom decided to take Brandy, and the games began. Brandy was NOT good with strange dogs when she was on a leash. She also did NOT come when she was called. Many an hour was spent chasing Brandy down until she exhausted herself.

So mom worked and worked and worked on making her a good dog. Eventually, she learned to come when called, and while she never really liked strange dogs, she would tolerate them.

As serious as Gunther was (he liked to play, but was very serious about playing), Brandy was the opposite. She was all silly, and would do anything for a laugh. She loved to run, and would hike and hike for miles, when mom took her to the mountains.

Brandy loved to run

She had a heart arrhythmia, and would faint at the drop of a hat. Then she would jump back up and be good as new. This went on for years, and mom thought for sure one day she just wouldn't get back up.

But just like Gunther, when she was almost 8 she got cancer. Her's was not as sudden, and she lived for a year after her diagnosis. She had a huge personality, and left a big hole our pack.

The Words for Wednesday

Hope that photo sparked your interest. Here's the skinny on what was happening:

About 10 years ago, mom was president of Pug PROS (Pug Rescue of Sacramento). She was also fostering a little black pug named Will. One day the adoption coordinator called to say that Jenna Elfman wanted to adopt Will. She already had a fawn girl pug, Gwen, and wanted to add to her family.

It so happened that she was coming to northern CA to film her TV show, Dharma and Greg, in Candlestick Park. So she invited a few PROS members to check out the shoot and deliver Will.

Mom had a blast! Jenna is very nice, her costar Thomas Gibson is better looking in person, and everyone on the set was wonderful. Mom is a huge baseball fan, and being in Candlestick, down on the field, was dream come true. The added surprise was that Steve Young was also in the episode, so mom got to meet him, too. For the record, he is a wonderful person. He spent a lot of time asking about pug rescue and getting to know us.

The photo of Jenna's pug peeing in the endzone (yes, it looks like she's pooping, which would be funnier) started when Gwen got the zoomies. She started running through the seats, with Jenna in hot pursuit. The shoot stopped while we all watched them dash up and down the stairs. Then Gwen made it onto the field, and the rest is history.

Memory Lane - Gunther

Lots of people don't know it, but mom was a Boxer person before she was a Pug person. Can you believe it?

So she's decided to share the Boxers she's had in her life with all of you.

First up: Gunther

Gunther on a camping trip at Whiskeytown Lake. He LOVED the outdoors

Official Name: UCD, Cheers to Gunther, CD, NAC, NJC, NGC, CGC

Born: July, 1988

Died: September, 1996

When mom bought her first house, the first thing she did was get a dog. After much debate, it was decided to get a Boxer. She loved the look, the personality, the smushy face and the wash-and-wear coat. She brought Gunther home at 10 weeks old, and he was all she'd wanted in a dog and more. He was funny, playful, obedient and energetic. That dog LOVED to play. And play. And play. Tennis balls were pretty good, but frisbees were the best. You rarely saw him without a frisbee hanging out of his mouth.

Gunther with his ever-present frisbee

When he was 6 months old, she took him to a dog training class. The instructor told her about competitive obedience, and that's all she wrote. Her's, and our, lives were never the same (and I wasn't even born yet!) He did pretty good in obedience (very good, in fact. He always scored really high in shows, and had lots of ribbons to prove it.)

When he was about 5 years old, he got wiped out while jumping up for a frisbee and tore his cruciate ligament. It never healed right, and he had a hard time sitting down straight. That ended his obedience career (lots of sitting goes on there), but he could still jump. A new sport, agility, was just taking off, so mom brought him to his first class. As you all know, we're still doing agility to this day. He managed to get some agility titles, and showed until the very end.

Gunther slept as hard as he played. Boxers are a lot like Pugs when it comes to comfort

When he was 8 years old, he was out running around the backyard. He was carrying a horseshoe in his mouth (yup, you read that right) and collapsed. It was in the middle of a wedding shower mom was having for a friend, but she ditched the party and rushed him to the vet. It was cancer (all too common in Boxers). He had surgery to remove the cancer, but he never recovered from surgery. He died a few days later.

Since then, she's never been without a Boxer in her house. She always talks about getting another breed, because of their long list of health issues, but ends up getting another Boxer. She says she has them "figured out", so why start over with another breed. She loves the fact they're great with kids, big enough to be intimidating but small enough to carry if she needs to, and don't bark much.

Had a great Valentines Day

We had a wonderful day here, thanks to Heart Day.

The best part was waiting for us in the mailbox.
Our friend Suki sent us cards.
One for each of us.
Mine was so cute - Suki is such a sweet girl.

And one for Arnie.
He was on cloud nine about his card.
He's dreaming of seeing her in a few weeks,
for our 1000 Pugs photo shoot.

Then, dad called mom to tell her
to look in the yard when she
got home from work for her gift.
She ran home, and when she
went outside, there it was.

Yup, we're going to have a veggie garden this summer!

Hope you all had a great Valentines Day.

After Agility Mini Adventure

Arnie and I are signed up for 1000 Pugs (along with Suki). We had really wanted the Grapevine Botanical Garden location, but when we signed up, it was booked. So we went with Historical Downtown McKinney. Thanks to a scheduling glitch, we were able to transfer our location back to the Garden.

But mom was curious about McKinney, and since we show there all the time, mom decided to take the opportunity to check out that area and see what the attraction is. On Saturday, we stopped by to check it out. She didn't get many photos, because the place was packed. Full of tourists and a bunch of teenagers at a music event. We walked around, looking into the shops and enjoying the nice day. She was utterly humiliated when I pooped on the sidewalk right in town. She was going to get a bite to eat and sit on a patio with me, but it was just a little cold and windy, so we'll have to do that another day.

Here's a shot of the town:

Mom set me up in front of a cute statue. Can you tell I'm exhausted from my agility runs?
